The Hunter Boots company, makers of the famed Hunter wellies, has just announced profits for the year of £4.1m for 2009. The rubber boot company saw turnover rise 41% to £25.7m. The wellies were made in Edinburgh, Scotland up until 2008 when manufacturing was moved to where else but China.

The company began life as the North British Rubber Company in 1856. Here are some other facts about Hunters:

• The most popular size for their wellies is 5-6
• 1m pairs of Hunters were sold in 2009
• In Britain, the most popular colour is green
• But in Scandinavia black is the most popular colour
• For trench soldiers in WW1 Hunter made 1.19m pairs of boots.

Hunter remain a firm favourite with old and young, establishment and celebs. Prince Charles is often captured on camera in his whilst out in the countryside and stars such as Pixie Lott (pictured) are often seen sporting theirs, along with their bare legs, at summer music festivals up and down the country.

I’ve just found a press cutting from last month that I thought was still worthy of a mention.

Last month our fairly new PM, David Cameron took a trip to America to visit their big chief Mr Obama. As is tradition, gifts were exchanged. Mr Cameron decided to give the President a work of art painted by a graffiti artist who had three convictions for criminal damage …not a Banksy though I suspect, they cost way too much. Dave brought gifts for the children too – a pair of Hunter wellies for Obama’s daughters. I’ve no idea what was given in return?

Now I don’t know if Hunter donated the wellies or whether the wellies were put on expenses (no, surely not!) but even if Hunter did donate them it was money well spent. According to a media monitoring company, the media coverage that the girls wellies got was worth something like £40,000 to Hunter. That’d be a rather shrewd investment …imagine how many more girls now want a pair of purple Hunter wellies!

Founded in 1853 by American Hiram Hutchinson as a rubber boot company, Aigle has become an iconic French fashion label.

Aigle originally made boots for French farmers and land workers. The company name is derived from A L’Aigle and a well known American symbol… the bald eagle.

The boots soon took off, especially the navy blue and white striped models for the farmers and the fake black leather boots were popular with the horsey crowd. Since those early days Aigle wellington boots have become firm favourites for both their practicality (sailors are very fond of them) and for the stylish designs and craftsmanship.
